Violence against Gays has to stop

Couple years ago my son was walking, late at night, in the streets of Ottawa with his friend.  A man, in a car, rolled down his window and yelled ''F.... fagets''.  Let me tell you that the party was over for my son that night.  Did he deserved to be treated like that?  I don't think so.  My son is gay but he is an human being and that night he was treated worse that a dog.  Some people treat dogs better than gays.

What makes my son different from any other kids?  Nothing.  He loves sports, he was on a provincial trampoline team, he plays volleyball, he loves music, going to plays, going out with friends and having a good time like any other kids.

As a mother do I see my son different when he is with another boy?  No, all I see is a sparkling in his eyes and that he is happy.  He is full of life and he does not stop dreaming about travelling the world, studying aboard, enjoying every minute that he lives on this earth.  In his circle of friends they all love him.  This week he is visiting a close friend in Oxford and London and this friend, also gay, has a nice blog:  inD-K where he shares his passion for music, arts and science.

So why is it that a pure stranger, that does not even know him, yells stupid things at him?

Anybody that bullies gays should not be breathing the same air as I do, they should not live in the same country as mine.  They should be condemned for the damage they do to these kids and their families.

My son is alive, thank God, but a family in Ottawa lost their gay son Jamie Hubley not too long ago.  This kid was bullied at school and he committed suicide.  Read the sad story:  http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2011/10/18/ottawa-teen-suicide-father.html

Now the question is are we going to do something about it?  When are we going to be able to send our kids in a safe school with no bullies?  These bullies should all be sent to one school, all together, where they could bullied each other.  They don't deserve a place in our normal school system.  Is Ottawa ready to take steps towards that direction and kick them out of our school system? What are we waiting for?  That another kid commits suicide and that another family grieves.

Helene, I really appreciate your support for gay rights. I'm sorry your son was/is discriminated against. It's not right. It's not ok. but sadly, it's something that isn't widely accepted still. You're a great supportive mom, and your son is lucky to have you!

I just read this..

Bullying of any kind is tragic:( I am so glad to hear of the new legislation in schools here in QC against bullying..
I love how you describe your son..He sounds wonderful Hélène~

Thinking of you..
